“You Hit Submit!” Event Honors Prestigious Scholarship Applicants

Students who applied to prestigious scholarships this fall gathered for the “You Hit Submit!” dinner on October 14, where they received recognition for all the time and effort invested in their applications. Students at the event applied for the Fulbright, Rhodes, and Schwarzman scholarships.

Amy McLaughlin, the National Scholarships and Prestigious Fellowships coordinator, spoke at the event and presented each student with a certificate to recognize their achievements and the dedication it takes to apply and submit their application.

McLaughlin told the students, “It really has been wonderful to get to know and work with all of you, and to see the promise you have and your remarkable abilities and minds. And not only that, but also the wonderful hearts and very worthy desires you have.”

Throughout the application process, students met with the National Scholarships and Prestigious Fellowships advisors to receive assistance on starting their submissions, and feedback on their work. The majority of students went through eight to 12 drafts with the office before submitting their applications.

“We truly believe your efforts deserve to be celebrated and you deserve to be celebrated for being the type of people who have lived their lives in such a way to be prepared to even apply for these awards and be willing to put in the dedication and the time that it takes to do it,” McLaughlin said. “I’m so impressed with all of you.”

Students from a wide range of academic disciplines applied for scholarships. Blake Bullock, German and Russian double major, applied to the Fulbright Germany English Teaching Assistantship. He shared his appreciation for his meetings with the office of National Scholarships for helping him to strengthen his application.

“They were able to help me if I needed to ask questions and they were there to support me,” Bullock said.

Art student Waverly Maughn applied for the Fulbright Korea English Teaching Assistantship. Maughn was studying abroad in Europe during the application period and met virtually with the office of National Scholarships for assistance on her application.

“I was living abroad and [the office] was willing to meet when we were in totally different timelines,” Maughn said. “[The office provided] super clear deadlines and were willing to help with all of our writing.”

The aims of the office of National Scholarships and Prestigious Fellowships align with the mission of BYU “to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life.” The office advises BYU students and alumni applying for scholarships for higher education, research, and teaching English abroad.
