Truman Scholarship

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program funds awards for students and individuals to conduct research, pursue graduate studies, or teach English abroad.

Funding

  • Round trip air fare
  • Living stipend (based on cost of living in the award country)
  • Accident and sickness benefits
Depending on the award country it may also include:
  • Tuition benefits
  • Support for dependents
  • Research allowance
  • Language lessons

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens
  • Applicants must have completed their first undergraduate degree by the grant start date
  • Students must not have completed a Ph.D.
  • Country-specific requirements

Citizenship

  • Only U.S. citizens may apply

Additional requirements

  • Those applying for a Fulbright study award must also apply to their chosen graduate program
  • Those applying for a Fulbright research grant must acquire a letter of affiliation from their host country

Criteria

  • Quality and feasibility of proposal
  • Academic or professional record
  • Extent to which the candidate and the project will help advance the Fulbright Program goals
  • Individual country requirements
  • Personal flexibility and adaptability

GPA

  • There is no minimum GPA for the Fulbright Program
  • If you are pursuing a graduate degree award, you must be eligible for acceptance to the graduate school to which you are applying

BYU application deadline

  • The application opens in April
  • BYU internal deadlines begin at the end of August
  • Applicants will be interviewed by an on-campus committee

Scholarship deadline

  • The foundation deadline is usually the second week of October.
