Gates Scholarship

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is an international postgraduate award for students to study at the University of Cambridge, with approximately 25 recipients selected each year from the United States.

Funding

  • A living allowance for a single adult student for the duration of their program; for Ph.D. scholars, the award is for up to 4 years.
  • Flights to and from U.K. at both the beginning and end of course
  • Inbound visa costs and Immigration Health Surcharge

Eligibility

  • Citizens from any country outside of the U.K. may apply
  • Applicants must apply for one of the following to be considered:
    • Ph.D. (full time or part time)
    • M.Litt. (full time)
    • One-year, full-time postgraduate course (See here for exceptions)
  • There is no age requirement to apply

Citizenship

  • Both U.S. and International students (except U.K. citizens) may apply
  • Approximately 25 scholarships available in U.S. round
  • Approximately 55 scholarships available in international round

Additional requirements

  • Applicants must apply to the graduate program they hope to attend in addition to applying for the scholarship

  • A commitment to improving the lives of others
  • Leadership potential

GPA

  • Any required GPA is determined by individual graduate programs at Cambridge
  • The average is 3.7-4.0

BYU application deadline

  • The application opens in early September
  • There is no BYU internal deadline
  • No BYU endorsement required to apply

Scholarship deadline

  • The foundation deadline is around the second week of October
