Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship is an international postgraduate award for students to study at the University of Oxford, with 32 scholarship recipients chosen each year from the United States.

Funding

  • All university and college fees for two years' study at Oxford
  • An annual living stipend for each year of study
  • Flights to and from U.K. at the beginning and end of years of study
  • Student visa fees

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be 23 years old or younger by October 1 of the application year OR 27 years old or younger if the applicant has completed their first undergraduate degree within the last two years (NOTE: This is a recent policy change)

Citizenship

  • Both U.S. and international students may apply

Additional requirements

  • Applicants need only apply for the scholarship—not to the University of Oxford

Criteria

  • A high level of intellectual and academic achievement
  • Energy to use one's talents fully
  • Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
  • Moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings

GPA

  • 3.7-4.0 (the average for award recipients is 3.9)

BYU application deadline

  • The application opens in early July
  • BYU internal deadlines begin in August
  • Candidates must be endorsed by BYU to apply for this award

Scholarship deadline

  • The foundation deadline is the first Wednesday of October
  • The submission deadline for international students is in early August
