Three recent Brigham Young University graduates have been awarded a unique opportunity to expand their perspectives and shape their futures while living abroad. Braden Hintze, Jane Lundgren, and Joshua Webster-Ford, winners of Fulbright Scholarships, are prepared to share their light with people around the globe.
When we think of Brigham Young University during graduation season, we often picture the high-profile stuff: our beautiful campus and inspiring professors, well-dressed deans and high-flying dunk teams, clever Cosmo and college valedictorians. But it's important to recognize an often-overlooked group of individuals who make this university truly exceptional: the unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help students become the people we hope to be.
Adam Johnson’s passion to help make the world a better place started even before he came to Brigham Young University. In fact, his passion to make a positive impact was just one of the many reasons Johnson was selected as a 2023 Truman Scholar. Johnson, an Honors Program student, was informed of this achievement by President Worthen and President-Elect Reese on April 10, 2023. This accomplishment of becoming a 2023 Truman Scholar marks the third consecutive year a Truman Scholar was selected from BYU.
After months of applying, writing essays, strategizing, and interviewing, students are recognized for their dedication at Brigham Young University’s “You Hit Submit” event. At “You Hit Submit,” faculty and staff join students in celebrating their applications to prestigious, national scholarships that may take them across the world. Though all share strong dedication, these students come from various majors, some of which include geospatial intelligence, applied English linguistics, public health promotion, political science, and Middle East studies.
A group of 25 Brigham Young University students have just hit “submit” in a big way. On October 14, these students met to celebrate their submitted applications to national and global scholarships. The Office of National Scholarships and Prestigious Fellowships and the Kennedy Center together organized a dinner to recognize applicants to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the Rhodes Scholarship, the Knight-Hennessy Scholars, and the Marshall Scholarship.
Rise and shout! Regardless of discipline, BYU students continue to make an impact in various fields of study – and they’ve got the hardware, awards and scholarships to prove it.
When Isabella Errigo learned she was awarded a prestigious 2022 Fulbright Research Grant, she felt stunned. For several days, Errigo double-checked the award letter to make sure she read it correctly. The news has begun to sink in, and she is excited to travel to Ecuador to build on her master’s research about the impact of land use on aquatic systems. Errigo is a 2020 Honors Program graduate and is finishing her master’s degree in environmental science and sustainability from the Department of Plant and Wildlife Sciences at Brigham Young University.
Emily Quan, Brigham Young University Honors Program and computer engineering student, was recently named a 2022 Truman Scholar. In April, President Kevin J Worthen informed Quan she was chosen from among 705 nominees representing 275 colleges and universities. Only 58 recipients nationwide were chosen. Her achievement marks the second consecutive year a BYU student received a Truman Scholarship.
Emily Quan, a Brigham Young University Honors Program student and computer engineering major, has been selected as a 2022 Truman Scholarship Finalist. The Truman Scholarship awards $30,000 to each of approximately 50 juniors throughout the country who demonstrate superior academic ability, exceptional leadership, and a strong record of service. This scholarship is the premier graduate fellowship in the United States for those pursuing careers as public service leaders.
As a Truman Scholarship Finalist, Emily recently interviewed with a panel from the Truman Foundation and will find out if she is a recipient in the coming weeks.
